Food hygiene inspections and training

Improve your food hygiene rating

Our food safety team offer a range of options to help you get food safety regulation right first time.

All businesses registered with us are subject to a food hygiene inspection. After your inspection you'll receive a food hygiene rating score based on the findings of an environmental health officer on the day they visit.

Food hygiene pre-inspection

Cost: £150

One of our officers can visit your business and give you a detailed report listing all the requirements that require your attention before your full inspection takes place.

You'll be provided with a complete Safer Food Better Business pack and a supply of diary sheets.

We can carry out a food hygiene pre-inspection if you own or manage:

  • A new business and haven't had your food hygiene inspection yet
  • A business who has recieved its food hygiene rating score and you want to make sure you improve before your next inspection

If you're interested in arranging a food hygiene pre-inspection, get in touch with us using the contact details on this page.

Review of food hygiene documents

Cost: £95 per hour

One of our officers can visit your business if you want us to review your food hygiene documents and provide some advice without a full pre-inspection.

Advice to help you with food hygiene regulations (Primary Authority Partnership)

Cost: £95 per hour

Primary Authority Partnership is where a business can form a legal partnership with a local authority who will deal with regulatory compliance issues.

You can join the scheme if your business either:

  • Is regulated by 2 or more local authorities for things like food safety or licensing, these are known as 'relevant functions'.
  • Has arrangements in place to share an approach to compliance with at least one other business, provided that the businesses are collectively regulated by more than one local authority.
  • Watch a video explaining Primary Authority Partnerships on YouTube (00:05:34)

If you're interested in arranging a Primary Authority Partnership, get in touch with us using the contact details on this page.

The scheme doesn't allow Primary Authorities to make a profit from these partnerships so the Better Regulation Delivery Office audits all partnerships.

Food hygiene training

You must make sure that any food handlers who prepare open, high-risk foods have formal training.

You should keep a record of the training each staff member has completed. This helps to demonstrate the individual levels of competence of your team.
