Anti-semitism: the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance has devised a working definition of Anti-semitism to highlight how Anti-semitism manifests itself in the 21st century. We have adopted this definition, which is "Anti-semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of Anti-semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."
Bullying: unwanted behaviour from a person or group that is either offensive, intimidating, malicious, or insulting; an abuse or misuse of power that undermines, humiliates, or causes physical or emotional harm to someone.
Discrimination: when someone is mistreated because of a protected characteristic.
Diversity: having differences within an organisation or setting. Diversity recognises that different identities, backgrounds, and experiences should all have equitable access to resources and decision-making.
Equity: treating people in ways that make sure they are not unfairly prevented from accessing resources and opportunities and making sure that others don't have an unfair advantage. Simply providing the same opportunities to everyone is not an effective way to create equality. Equity is about giving people what they need for fair access and removing inequalities. This makes sure everyone has the chance to realise their ambitions.
Harassment: unwanted behaviour related to a protected characteristic which has the purpose or effect of violating someone’s dignity, or which creates a hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment for someone with a protected characteristic.
Hate crime: in line with recommendations from the Police and Crime Commissioner's research and consultation report on Hate Crime (December 2015), we adopt the definition of hate crime as "… a criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal or protected characteristic or perceived characteristic."
Hate incident: we adopt the definition of a hate incident as "…a non-crime incident which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal or protected characteristic or perceived characteristic".
Inclusion: making sure people of different backgrounds, experiences, and identities feel welcomed, respected, valued, and fully able to participate. It is not only about creating a diverse environment but also about making sure a culture exists where individuals can be themselves.
