UK Youth Parliament

UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) provides opportunities for 11-18-year-olds to be democratically elected as a Member of UK Youth Parliament (MYP).

Being elected gives young people the opportunity to work locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to help improve lives and services for young people. 

UKYP conduct several democratic activities across the year, including:

  • An annual conference.
  • House of Commons debates.
  • Regional meetings.
  • Regular dialogue with ministers, including the prime minister and opposition spokespeople.

What do Members of Youth Parliament do?

Members of Youth Parliament have tasks that include:

  • Supporting and speaking on behalf of young people in the borough.
  • Working alongside Rochdale Borough Children’s Champion to help improve the lives of children and young people in the borough.
  • Attending and chairing meetings for Rochdale Borough Youth Council, which meets every 4 months.
  • Attending and chairing meetings for Rochdale Borough Youth Cabinet, which meets every 2 weeks.
  • Participating in Youthforia – a regional youth forum for young people across the North West.
  • Having enthusiasm, energy and interest in the rights of children and young people. They'll work to get this message to all children and young people of the borough of Rochdale.

Our Members of Youth Parliament

2 democratically elected MYPs and 2 deputies serve the borough of Rochdale.

2024-2026 elected members

  • Sarah Orakwue (MYP): a pupil of Rochdale Sixth Form College who is very passionate about justice and keeping young people safe. Her manifesto points:
    • Stop racism.
    • Be a voice for young girls who have suffered sexual harassment,
    • Stop knife crime.
  • Hussain Malik (MYP): a pupil of Falinge Park High School who is keen to build the borough's reputation, improve community involvement and develop education. His manifesto points:
    • Showcase the borough of Rochdale and all the great things about it.
    • Build communities by learning from others.
    • Work with teachers on how young people are assessed.
  • Amelia Stewart (deputy): from Middleton.
  • Benedicte Kapiamba (deputy): from Rochdale.
