Choosing an instrument - if you already play
If you already play an instrument, there are still many ways of expanding your musical knowledge.
Study music theory
Music theory enables people to have a complete understanding of musical composition. It gives a broad understanding of the subject and adds a perspective to the orchestra as a whole. It's also useful if you wish to progress any instrument beyond grade 5.
Take aural classes
Having a good ear is key to all musicianship and all types of music. No matter what instrument you play, aural classes will help tune your sense of pitch, rhythm and harmony.
Learn the piano
The piano is a popular choice for a second instrument as it teaches harmony and is complete in itself. Knowing how to play the piano is always useful, particularly for university or other higher education music courses. It teaches harmony and is complete in itself. Consider it if you want to broaden your understanding of music.
Learn to sing
All musicians should spend time in a choir. As well as the positive benefits of being part of a music group such as lower stress levels and having a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, it also helps to expand your knowledge of music.
