Documents you need to give notice
You must provide the original documents. We do not accept digital copies, photocopies or faxes. If the document is in another language, we need an English translation. If you cannot provide any of these, please contact us for advice.
At your appointment, you'll need to have:

If you were born in the United Kingdom and do not have a passport and were born on or before 31 December 1982, you'll need to provide your birth certificate. If you do not have a current passport and were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983, or not born in this country, please contact us for advice.

- Driving licence
- Current council tax bill
- Utility bill dated within the last 3 months of your appointment
- Bank or building society statement dated within one month of your appointment
- Your current tenancy agreement

You need either a court-certified copy of your Decree Absolute or a copy of the death certificate for your former husband, wife or civil partner. If you are not named on the death certificate, you also need to provide your marriage or civil partnership certificate. If your divorce took place in another country, you need to produce the original divorce documents and an English translation if required.
- Foreign nationals - you must provide proof of your current immigration status. This includes:
- Proof of settled, pre-settled or pending EUSS status, including the 6-digit share code from GOV.UK.
- Valid Biometric residence permit.
- Valid marriage or civil partnership visa in your passport.
- Valid Home Office endorsement in your passport showing indefinite leave to remain.
- Valid UK residence permit in your passport.
- If you have a marriage or civil partnership visa or do not have the appropriate immigration status, you will both need to provide a passport-sized colour photo when you give notice. The photo must follow the UK passport style and size rules.
- If you do not have the correct proof, or appropriate immigration status we have to refer your marriage to the Home Office. They may decide to extend your notice period for 70 days if they wish to investigate further. Your marriage cannot take place until approval is granted by the Home Office.
