Too much artificial light from homes and businesses, known as light pollution, can affect your health and make your life at home uncomfortable.

Before you report an issue to us

Politely speak to the property owner. They may not realise they're causing a problem and might be able to resolve the issue quickly. Advice on talking to your neighbour from GOV.UK

If talking to the property owner doesn't work or you can't speak to them, you can report the issue to us.

What you can report to us

You can report ongoing issues with:

  • Home security lights
  • Business security lights
  • Car park floodlights
  • Advertising or sign lights
  • Building or landscape lights

Your details won’t be disclosed to anyone, but we need your name and address for legal reasons to show that the issue affects you at your property.

Tips to prevent problems with artificial lights 

To avoid problems with artificial lights:

  • Don't fit lights you don't need
  • Don't leave lights on if you don't need to
  • Don't use lights that are too bright 
  • Aim lights so they only light up your property
  • Make sure lights only detect movement on your property
  • Angle security lights downwards, below 70 degrees
