Most pupils with special educational needs attend local mainstream schools, but some will be placed at special schools or specialist schools.
Will my child attend a special school?
Most children with special educational needs can be supported in local mainstream schools without involvement from us.
However, some pupils require extra support. As far as possible, we try to deliver this extra support at local mainstream schools. However, in exceptional cases it may be more appropriate to place a child with a Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan at either:
- A special school in the borough
- A specialist school outside the borough
How is the decision made?
The type of additional support a child needs is decided on in consultation with parents and professionals, following a full formal assessment.
