Introduction

It's essential that any allegation of abuse made against any member of staff or volunteer in any setting, particularly a professional who works with children and young people, is investigated. All cases should be dealt with fairly, quickly, consistently and in a way that provides effective protection for the child or children. Support must also be given to the person who is the subject of the allegation. Each local authority has a Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) in post to co-ordinate the management of allegations against those in a position of responsibility for children.

Any adult who works in regulated activity with children or young people can be considered for allegations management if they are alleged to have:

  • Behaved in a way that has harmed, or may have harmed a child.
  • Committed a criminal offence against or related to a child.
  • Behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they pose a risk of harm to children.
