- Introduction

The Responsible Retailers Scheme is aimed at retailers who sell age-restricted products including alcohol, cigarettes and knives to name a few. The scheme encourages retailers to be responsible to help reduce crime, antisocial behaviour and poor health across the borough, which could be related to the use and abuse of age-restricted products. It also aims to give residents peace of mind when shopping and protect them from harm.
We employ volunteers who will accompany a team of public protection officers, to visit a number of traders in the borough, under strict guidelines to ensure the safety of the volunteers at all times. We then undertake programmed test purchase surveys of age restricted products to check compliance.
We also investigate service requests and complaints and where necessary take appropriate and proportionate enforcement action, including prosecutions. If the need arises enforcement action will be taken in accordance with the Authority’s agreed Enforcement and Prosecution Policy.
