Who is a carer?

If you provide unpaid care, for a few hours a day or round the clock, to a friend or relative who could not manage without your support, you are a carer. The care you give may be due to age, illness, disability, mental health problems, or substance misuse.

As a carer, your life is often complex. Juggling other commitments like work or school alongside your caring role can be incredibly challenging. Whether you live with the person you care for or call in to help, these situations can create additional stress. It's important to acknowledge how these responsibilities might impact your financial or educational opportunities, as well as your own health and wellbeing.

You may not realise you're a carer and feel you're simply being kind by looking after a family member or friend. You provide huge benefits to the person you care for, as well as wider benefits to the health and social care system.

More support for carers

We recognise and value the roles of carers and are fully committed to improving the lives of carers. We’re here to support you and help make things easier where we can.
