We've different programmes to improve the roads across the borough of Rochdale.

We carry out roadworks as part of the essential repair and improvement of our roads. Public utility companies also carry out roadworks to maintain essential gas, water, electricity and phone services. Some of these works may require the use of temporary traffic lights or temporary road closures.

Searching for roadworks and reporting issues: find out how long the works are expected to last, which organisation is carrying out the works and contact details for that organisation. If you have any issues to report regarding any roadworks, these should be passed on to the organisation undertaking the works.

Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair damage after a landslip.
Expected start and finish: midnight, Monday, 7 January 2019 - midnight, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 as required when weather is permitting.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Ashworth Road from a point 170 metres east of Black Dad Lane.
Alternative route: the alternative route will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: the restrictions are required on:

  • Ings Lane so away team supporter coaches can park while attending matches at Spotland Stadium
  • Willbutts Lane so supporters can vacate safely away from the stadium.

Expected start and finish: the restrictions will only be in place on event days at Spotland Stadium between 0.01am, Friday, 1 March 2019 - 23.59pm, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 when required and will be signed on site when in place.
Restriction and location: temporary:

  • Closure and no waiting at any time on Ings Lane along the east side, from its junction with Phoenix Street to a point opposite its junction with Lisbon Street.
  • Closure of Willbutts Lane from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Churchill Street.

Alternative route: the alternative route for Ings Lane is Rooley Moor Road and Edenfield Road. The alternative route for Willbutts Lane is Sandy Lane and Edenfield Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to provide a safe and convenient location to park coaches containing supporters attending the Rochdale AFC v Sunderland AFC football match at Spotland Stadium.

Expected start and finish:

  • Closure of Ings Lane: 1pm-6pm on Saturday, 6 April 2019
  • Closure of Willbutts Lane: 2pm-3pm and 4.30pm-5.30pm on Saturday, 6 April 2019.
  • No waiting at any time on Ings Lane and Willbutts Lane: 7am-4pm on Saturday, 6 April 2019.

Restriction and location: temporary:

  • Closure of the east carriageway of Ings Lane from its junction with Rooley Moor Road to its junction with Edenfield Road.
  • Closure of Willbutts Lane from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Churchill Street.
  • No waiting at any time on the south side of Wilbutts Lane for its entire length, both sides of Sandy Lane for its entire length and both sides Ings Lane from its junction with Rooley Moor Road to its junction with Edenfield Road.

Alternative route: the alternative route for Ings Lane is Rooley Moor Road and Edenfield Road. The alternative route for Willbutts Lane is Sandy Lane and Edenfield Road.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to allow access to a housing development site.
Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday, 16 July 2018 - 6pm, Wednesday, 15 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary cycle lane closure:

  • On the east side of Hollin Lane from a point 125 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • From a point 245 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 52 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative route: cyclists will still be able to travel down these road using the main areas of the road, not the cycle lanes.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to carry out emergency repairs to a waste water sewer in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 9am, Friday, 15 March 2019 for a maximum of 21 days.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Ivy Drive from a point 30 metres north west of its junction with Manchester New Road for a distance of 30 metres in a north westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Manchester New Road and Hall Drive.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to access a water valve chamber.
Expected start and finish: 7pm-11pm, Thursday, 21 March 2019
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Long Street in a northerly direction between its junction with Long Street, Market Place, Assheton Way and Eastgate roundabout for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Assheton Way, Oldham Road, Middleton Way, Manchester Old Road, Heywood Old Road, Coronation Avenue, Middleton Road, Hollin Lane and Rochdale Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to make room for temporary traffic lights and a pedestrian walkway while a scaffold is erected on the north side of Grimshaw Lane.
Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday, 25 March 2019 - 6pm, Thursday, 25 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary no waiting at any time and temporarily suspend the 1 hour maximum stay, Monday-Saturday 9.30am-4pm, on the south side of Grimshaw Lane, from a point 15 metres east of its junction with Glen Grove for a distance of 50 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: due to the nature of the restriction, no alternative route needs to be in place.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to clear vegatation from the railway bridge and install new signage on it.
Expected start and finish: 10pm - 5am each night, Monday, 8 April 2019 - Saturday, 13 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure to vehicles of Joshua Lane from its junction with Oak Street to its junction with Hercules Green.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Mills Hill Road, Oldham Road, Townley Street, Grimshaw lane, Lees Street and Joshua Lane.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.


Area: Middleton
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 8am - 5pm, each day from Tuesday, 23 April 2019 - Tuesday, 30 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of West Street to vehicles for its entire length.
Alternative route: there is no alternative route for vehicles. Pedestrian access will not be affected.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Monday, 11 March 2019 - 6pm, Monday, 4 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.


Area: Heywood
Reason: to carry out emergency repairs to a broken gas main in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 8am, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 - 11.59pm, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 or until the works are complete, whichever is sooner.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Peel Lane from its junction with Claybank Street for a distance of 83 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to replace a frame and cover in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 7am-10am, Sunday, 31 March 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary one-way working and temporary no right and left turning:

  • Introduce one-way working in a northerly direction along Pilsworth Road, from its junction with Margaret Street to its junction with Bridge Street in so far as vehicles will not be permitted to travel along Pilsworth Road in a southerly direction from its junction with Bridge Street to its junction with Margaret Street.
  • Prohibit vehicles from undertaking a right turn manoeuvre from Pilsworth Road onto Bridge Street,
  • Prohibit vehicles from undertaking a right turn manoeuvre from Bridge Street onto Pilsworth Road,
  • Prohibit vehicles from undertaking a left turn manoeuvre from Bridge Street onto Pilsworth Road.

Alternative route: the following alternative routes can be used:

  • The alternative route for vehicles travelling along Pilsworth Road in a northerly direction and wishing to turn right onto Bridge Street is via Bridge Street, Peel Street, Cherwell Avenue, Bank Top Street, West Starkey Street, Bamford Road and Market Street.
  • The alternative route for vehicles travelling along Bury Street in a easterly direction and wishing to turn right onto Pilsworth Road is via Peel Street, Cherwell Avenue, Bank Top Street, West Starkey Street, Bamford Road, Market Street, Bridge Street, Bury Street, Bury New Road, Heap Brow and Moss Hall Road or alternatively via Bridge Street, Dawson Street, Bamford Road, Market Street, Bridge Street, Bury Street, Bury New Road, Heap Brow and Moss Hall Road.
  • The alternative route for vehicles travelling along Bridge Street in a westerly direction and wishing to turn left onto Pilsworth Road is via Bridge Street, Bury Street, Bury New Road, Heap Brow and Moss Hall Road.

Reason: to replace a gas pipe in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Saturday, 6 April 2019 - 6pm, Sunday, 21 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary

  • One way working in a northerly direction along Middleton Road from its junction with Withington Street to its junction with Manchester Road. Vehicles won't be able to travel along Middleton Road in a southerly direction from its junction with Manchester Road to its junction with Manchester Road to its junction with Withington Street.
  • No turning left or right from Manchester Road on to Middleton Road.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Manchester Road and Coronation Avenue.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to replace studs in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 9.30am-3.30pm every day from Monday, 15 April 2019 - Friday, 19 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Bamford Road from its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road to its junction with River Street. Pedestrian access won't be affected and access will be maintained where possible and safe to do so.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to install a new water connection.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 - 6pm, Thursday, 25 April 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Walker Street from its junction with Seymour Street for a distance of 16 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Seymour Street, Coomassie Street and Egerton Street.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to clean and survey a sewer in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 8.30am-3.30pm, Sunday, 5 May 2019.
Restriction and location: temporarily closure of:

  • Queens Park Road – from its junction with Holland Street for a distance of 17 metres in a northerly direction.
  • Willow Street – from its junction with Queens Park Road for a distance of 5 metres in a easterly direction.

Alternative route: the following alternative routes can be used:

  • The alternative route for vehicles using Queens Park Road is York Street, Market Place, Bamford Road and Starkey Street.
  • The alternative route for vehicles using Willow Street is John Street, Hardman Street, Queens Park Road, York Street, Market Place, Bamford Road and Starkey Street.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate drainage improvement works.
Expected start and finish: 9.30am, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 - 6pm, Saturday, 1 June 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary one-way working and temporary no right and left turning:

  • Introduce one-way working in a southerly direction along Middleton Road, from its junction with Sycamore Avenue for a distance of 79 metres in a southerly direction in so far as vehicles will not be permitted to travel along Middleton Road in a northerly direction from its junction with Coronation Avenue/Middleton Road Roundabout to its junction with Sycamore Avenue,
  • Introduce one-way working in an easterly direction along Glamis Avenue from its northerly junction with Middleton Road for a distance of 12 metres in so far as vehicles will not be permitted to travel along Glamis Avenue in a westerly direction from a point 12 metres east of its junction with Middleton Road to its junction with Middleton Road,
  • Prohibit vehicles from undertaking a left turn manoeuvre from Coronation Avenue/Middleton Road Roundabout onto Middleton Road in a northerly direction,
  • Prohibit vehicles from undertaking a right turn manoeuvre from Glamis Avenue (its northerly junction with Middleton Road) onto Middleton Road.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles travelling along Middleton Road in a northerly direction and wishing to continue over the Coronation Avenue/Middleton Road Roundabout onto Middleton Road is via Coronation Avenue and Manchester Road.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Expected start and finish: ongoing
Work being undertaken: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  1. Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  2. Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925.

    The helpdesk hours are: Monday-Friday, 8am-7.30pm, Saturday, 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.

Restriction and location: temporary closure of unnamed footpath from Bramhall Close to Elizabethan Way, from Elizabethan Way for a distance of 46 metres in a north westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.
