We've different programmes to improve the roads across the borough of Rochdale.

We carry out roadworks as part of the essential repair and improvement of our roads. Public utility companies also carry out roadworks to maintain essential gas, water, electricity and phone services. Some of these works may require the use of temporary traffic lights or temporary road closures.

Searching for roadworks and reporting issues: find out how long the works are expected to last, which organisation is carrying out the works and contact details for that organisation. If you have any issues to report regarding any roadworks, these should be passed on to the organisation undertaking the works.

Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a sewer in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 9am, Wednesday, 4 September-9am, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 or until the work is completed, whichever comes sooner.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Ann Street, from its junction with Dowling Street for a distance of 49 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Dowling Street and Milkstone Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to hold the Williams BMW Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run 2019.
Expected start and finish:

  • The temporary prohibition of vehicles will be operative on:
    • The Esplanade, including the entire car parking area in front of the town hall, from 6am-6pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
    • St Albans Street, Park Street, Broadfield Stile, Drake Street, Mere Street, William Street, Tweedale Street, Lower Tweedale Street, Milkstone Road, Miall Street and Durham Street, from 10am-3pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
    • Oldham Road, from 10.30am-12noon on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
    • Hollingworth Road, Rakewood Road and Lake Bank, from 11am-1pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019.   
  • The temporary prohibition of pedestrians will be operative from 10am-3pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
  • The temporary introduction and suspension of all one-way working will be operative from 10am-3pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
  • The Temporary prohibition of waiting will be operative from 8pm, Saturday, 5 October 2019-6pm, Sunday, 6 October 2019.

Restriction and location:
  • Temporary closure to vehicles of:
    • The Esplanade, from its junction with Manchester Road, St Marys Gate and Dane Street to its junction with Newgate, including the entire enclosed car parking area in front of the town hall.
    • St Albans Street, for its entire length.
    • Park Street, from its junction with St Albans Street to its junction with Broadfield Street.
    • Broadfield Stile, for its entire length.
    • Drake Street, from its junction with Castlemere Street to its junction with Suffolk Street.
    • Mere Street, from its junction with Drake Street to its junction with Tweedale Street.

    • Hollingworth Road, for its entire length.
    • Rakewood Road, from its junction with Hollingworth Road to a point 80 metres south of the unnamed footpath around Hollingworth Lake rear Lake Bank.
    • Lake Bank, for its entire length.
  • Temporarily prohibit pedestrians from proceeding along:
    • Manchester Road, from its junction with the Esplanade to its junction with Drake Street.
    • The Esplanade, the south side, from its junction with Manchester Road for a distance of 100 metres in an easterly direction. 
  • Temporarily introduce one-way working along:
    • Vicars Drive, from its junction with St Albans Street for the remainder of its length in  a northerly direction. Vehicles will not be permitted to travel along Vicars Drive in a southerly direction between Sparrow Hill and Drake Street.
    • Dowling Street, from its junction with Milkstone Road to its junction with Ann Street in an easterly direction. Vehicles will not be permitted to travel in a westerly direction between Ann Street and Milkstone Road.
    • Ann Street, from its junction with Lower Tweedale Street to its junction with Milk Street in a northerly direction. Vehicles will not be permitted to travel in a southerly direction between Milk Street and Lower Tweedale Street. 
  • Temporary suspension of one-way working along Ann Street, from its junction with Dowling Street to its junction with Lower Tweedale Street in a southerly direction.
  • Temporary suspension of one-way working along Milkstone Road, from its junction with William Street to its junction with Devon Street in a southerly direction.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from waiting at any time along the Esplanade, both sides from its junction with Vicars Gate to its junction with Newgate, including the entire enclosed car parking area in front of the town hall.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to allow access to a housing development site.
Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday, 16 July 2018 - 6pm, Wednesday, 15 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary cycle lane closure:

  • On the east side of Hollin Lane from a point 125 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • From a point 245 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 52 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative route: cyclists will still be able to travel down these road using the main areas of the road, not the cycle lanes.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct the new railway station access.
Expected start and finish: 8am, Wednesday, 7 August 2019 - Tuesday, 4 February 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Prohibition of pedestrians from proceeding along the southerly footway of Oldham Road, from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Prohibition of waiting on the northerly side of Oldham Road, from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a banging frame and cover in the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 8am-6pm on Monday, 16 September 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Lincoln Road from its junction with Minway East to a point 25 metres south of its junction with Mainway East.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Mainway East, Andover Avenue and Lincoln Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to work on the new railway station access at Mills Hill.
Expected start and finish: 8am on Saturday, 21 September to 6am on Monday, 23 September 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Oldham Road, from its junction with Baytree Lane to its junction with Mills Hill Road.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Oldham Road, Manchester New Road, Victoria Avenue East, Hollinwood Avenue and Middleton Road.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am-4.30pm each day from Friday, 4 October-Friday, 18 October 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure to vehicles of the following:

  • Cheltenham Road - for its entire length.
  • Ledbury Close - for its entire length.
  • York Road East - for its entire length.
  • York Road West - for its entire length.
  • Lincoln Road - for its entire length.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: to work on a new housing development.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Monday, 11 March 2019 - 6pm, Monday, 4 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge and allow the safe passage of pedestrians only.
Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Thursday, 6 June 2019 - 11.59pm, Monday, 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Walton Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Hardfield Street and Schofield Street.

Reason: to replace a waste water manhole cover in the carriageway.

Restriction and location: temporary closure of Hewyood Road, from its junction with Heap Street to a point 32 metres in a westerly direction.
Alternative route: there is no alternative route available.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Expected start and finish: 7.30am-5pm each day from Tuesday, 17 September 2019 - Monday, 7 October 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Sutherland Road for its entire length.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Expected start and finish: ongoing
Work being undertaken: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  1. Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  2. Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925.

    The helpdesk hours are: Monday-Friday, 8am-7.30pm, Saturday, 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
