Street naming and numbering register

Single properties

If you are a developer of a new property, you should contact us to request a number for the property when you receive your Building Regulations.

Along with the request you'll need to send us a PDF of the plan of the position of the development in relation to other properties. This will be included in the central database.

We will allocate the numbers as well as contact all utilities companies, Land Registry, Royal Mail, emergency services, Ordnance Survey and all relevant council services.

You should pass on the relevant information to the prospective purchasers of the property.

Large estates or apartment complexes

When you start work on site we ask you to complete the street naming and numbering request form below with your suggestions for road names. We will check the suitability of the road names in the local area. This takes about 2 weeks.

When the name is agreed, we will register the street name and the numbering. You can then inform prospective buyers of their new address.

We will send the information to all utilities companies, Land Registry, Royal Mail, emergency services, Ordnance Survey and all relevant council services.

When appropriate, we will ask you to provide new street name plates to our standard design.

You'll need to provide all plans as PDF files to be included in a central database.

For brand new estates we need you to enter into a Section 38 Agreement. Please state on the form, if you wish to do so. This will then be passed to the relevant engineer to arrange.

Renaming or renumbering a street

You should give careful consideration to the original naming request as we are reluctant to rename a street once it is named.

Where plans have changed and renumbering or an additional street name is necessary, complete this form:

You must tell the Land Registry once we have informed them of the renumbered properties.

Utilities companies, Land Registry, Royal Mail, emergency services, Ordnance Survey and relevant council services will be informed of all changes.

Naming your house

You need to contact us before naming your house. If a property is already numbered, the property owner must still contact us requesting that a name be added. It is a legal requirement that the number remain as part of the address.

The name does NOT however form part of the official address for that property, and the number must still be displayed on all correspondence.

It's the owner's responsibility to inform the Land Registry of the name so that the deeds can be updated.

Street naming in support of our Armed Forces

On 17 April 2013 the council supported the implementation of a policy of offering families of fallen service personnel who have died in active duty from the borough of Rochdale a chance to have a street or road named after their loved one.

Such lasting recognition, if this were the wishes of the family, could be a poignant way of demonstrating the community's admiration for those who serve and the value the whole country places on their courage and patriotism.

If you feel you would like to do this provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • Your proposal, including:
    • The name of the person you would like to have a street named after
    • Their regiment
    • The decoration they were awarded
    • Their rank at the time they received their medal
    • Their serial number
    • Their last address
    • Their relationship to Rochdale
    • Why this is important to you
    • Your relationship to your friend or family member
  • The general area you desire for the street name

We will try to accommodate you as much as possible with regard to the name of the street and its location, discuss this with you at every stage and keep you informed.
