With less than 4 months to go, the organisers of Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon and 10K have released a video of the new routes.
Watch the 2-minute film showing the new scenic routes for the half marathon and 10K.
For the events third year, race routes have been re-designed, taking in some of the borough's best open spaces, including Hollingworth Lake in Littleborough, Broadfield Park, Kingsway Business Park the Stanney Brook Corridor and Rochdale Canal.
Already more than 300 runners have registered for places for the events on Sunday 8 October 2017.
Runners will start at Rochdale Town Hall and set out on new traffic-free courses taking in town and some of the borough's best countryside scenes.
The half marathon leaves the town hall along the Esplanade and runs the edge of Broadfield Park, before heading through to the Rochdale Canal at Oldham Road Basin. The route then heads past Kingsway Business Park and Smithy Bridge along the canal. Close to the Waterside Restaurant the route leaves the tow path and heads up Hollingworth Road towards Hollingworth Lake, making a clockwise loop of the lake. It then returns down Hollingworth Road and back on to the canal. The race retraces its outward route from the town hall until it reaches Broadfield Park, where runners will go through the park before re-joining The Esplanade for the final sprint to the finish line.
'The new routes take in stunning scenery, the area's rich history, the beauty of Hollingworth Lake and the canal as well as the Green Flag Award winning Broadfield Park'
The 10K follows the same route as the half marathon on to the canal, but leaves the canal at the swing bridge at Kingsway Business Park, making a loop of scenic cycleways, before returning to the canal and the same finishing route as the half marathon.
Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run is organised by Middleton Harriers, Rochdale Harriers and Rochdale Triathlon Club supported by us.
Nick Barton from Rochdale Harriers said:
"Our half marathon and 10K courses are even more scenic than last year with very good running conditions underfoot. They both have long, flat straight sections that will be great for pacing and maintaining your speed. The new routes take in stunning scenery, the area's rich history, the beauty of Hollingworth Lake and the canal as well as the Green Flag Award winning Broadfield Park, and there aren't many better start and finish points than the iconic Grade One Rochdale Town Hall."
