Apprenticeships rewarded at regional finals

21 September 2018

Council apprenticeship team with staff from Jackson Jackson and Sons Limited.

Our apprenticeship team were big winners at the north west regional finals of the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Now in their 15th year the Apprenticeship Awards recognise excellence and those who go above and beyond with apprenticeships in businesses. This year's awards saw over 1200 entries and we were one of only 2 local authorities to make it to the finals. They ran out worthy winners in both the Macro Employer of the Year and scooped a double win with the Recruitment Excellence Awards.

The event was held at the Manchester Marriott Victoria and Albert Hotel, with a variety of public and private employers coming together in recognition of outstanding, innovative work in the apprenticeship sector.

The 2 awards demonstrate the hard work we have put in with the apprenticeships programme which has seen more than 130 apprenticeships start with us and within local schools in the last year, one of the highest amounts in local government. We are one of only a handful of public sector organisations to meet our apprenticeship start target this year, with at least 2.3 per cent of our staff being apprentices.

'This a fantastic achievement and is yet another great success story for Rochdale and our apprenticeship programme'

Councillor John Blundell.

Councillor John Blundell, Cabinet Member for Skills and Employment, said: "This a fantastic achievement and is yet another great success story for Rochdale and our apprenticeship programme. I am so proud of the hard work and dedication of the team, and the council as a whole, puts in to apprenticeships and supporting the future workforce, these wins reflect that work."

Winning these awards means that the team will now be put forward to the national finals of the Apprenticeship Awards which will be held in November 2018.

There was further delight for the borough as local construction company Jackson, Jackson and Sons Limited, who offer a range of apprenticeships for young people in the borough, were highly commended in the SME (Small and medium-sized enterprises) Employer of the Year category.

'Our diverse range of apprentices, from all backgrounds, makes us proud and we would encourage other companies to embrace the apprenticeship schemes' Andy Turner and Toni Carter recieving their award for Macro Employer.

Owner Helen Senior said: "To achieve this award in a category of over 1200 applicants is a huge honour for us, and is testament to our commitment to apprentices and the commitment they show us in return. Our diverse range of apprentices, from all backgrounds, makes us proud and we would encourage other companies to embrace the apprenticeship schemes."
