Backdating Housing Benefit claims

When are Housing Benefit and Local Housing Allowance paid?

Housing benefit and Local Housing Allowance are normally paid from the Monday after we receive your claim, however, claims can sometimes be backdated to start from an earlier date. There are different rules for backdating claims depending on your age.

If you or your partner are of pensionable age

Your claim will automatically be backdated for a maximum of 3 months depending on your circumstances. There is no need for you to make a request.

If you're of working age

From April 2016 you can apply for backdated benefit for a maximum period of 1 month depending on your circumstances.

Local Council Tax Support has replaced Council Tax benefit and working age claimants will not be eligible for backdating.

Good reasons for backdating

To request your benefit be backdated you'll need to give good reason why your claim is late. This is known as 'good cause'  and must be continuous for the period you want benefit backdated. If you're in the process of completing a claim for benefit use it to request backdating of benefit otherwise select and download the relevant form at the link below.

You can get advice on backdating from organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau.
