Council Tax - report a change of address

You must let us know if you're liable for Council Tax and you're moving home so we can make sure your Council Tax is correct. Please let us know as soon as you can.

Moving within the borough

You can complete this task in MyAccount. You'll need to sign in or register for MyAccount to tell us you're moving house and staying in the borough.

  1. Sign in or register for MyAccount using the link below.
  2. Add your Council Tax account, if you haven't done so already. You'll need your 8 digit Council Tax reference number for the address you're moving from which you can find on your bill. You'll also need to answer a few security questions.
  3. From your online Council Tax account, follow the link for moving house.
  4. Have the following information ready to give on the form:
    • The address of your new home.
    • The exact date you moved or are planning to move.
    • The exact date you moved furniture or are planning to move furniture into your new property and out of your previous property.
    • The exact dates your tenancy agreements end and begin on your new and previous homes, if applicable.
    • The exact date sale completed or is due to complete on your new and previous homes, if applicable.
    • Landlord or lettings agent name, address and phone number for your new and previous homes, if applicable.
    • Name and phone number of the previous occupier of your new home, if known.
    • Name and phone number of the new owner of your previous home, if applicable.
  5. We'll then send you a closing bill and an opening bill at your new address. We aim to do this within 2 weeks of you moving in to your new home or if you've already moved, within 2 weeks of you telling us but in some cases it can take longer.
  6. If you've overpaid for your old address, we'll reduce what you owe for your new address.
  7. Once you've got your Council Tax bill for your new address, you can sign in to MyAccount to check your balance, amend or set up your Direct Debit payments and more.

Moving out of the borough

You can complete this task in MyAccount. You'll need to sign in or register for MyAccount to tell us you're moving out of the borough.

  1. Sign in or register for MyAccount using the link below.
  2. Add your Council Tax account, if you haven't done so already. You'll need your 8 digit Council Tax reference number for the address you're moving from which you can find on your bill. You'll also need to answer a few security questions.
  3. From your online Council Tax account, follow the link for moving house.
  4. Have the following information ready to give on the form:
    • The address of your new home.
    • The exact date you moved or are planning to move from your old property.
    • The exact date you moved furniture or are planning to move furniture out of your old property.
    • The exact date your tenancy agreement ended or is due to end on your previous home, if applicable.
    • The exact date sale completed or is due to complete on your previous home, if applicable.
    • Landlord or lettings agent name, address and phone number for your previous home, if applicable.
    • Name and phone number of the new owner of your previous home, if applicable.
  5. We'll send your closing bill to your new address. We aim to do this within 2 weeks of you moving in to your new home or if you've already moved within 2 weeks of you telling us but in some cases it can take longer.
  6. You'll be responsible for paying Council Tax until the date the sale completes on your property. If you're renting, you'll be responsible for paying Council Tax until the date your tenancy agreement ends. If you've overpaid for your old address, we'll send you a refund when we close your account.
  7. Remember, it's your responsibility to tell the local authority where you're moving that you've moved house so you can register for Council Tax at your new address.

Sign in or register for MyAccount to tell us you're moving out of the borough

Moving to the borough or moving from a property where you didn't pay Council Tax

To tell us you're moving to Rochdale borough from somewhere else or moving from a property where you didn't pay Council Tax:

  1. Get the following information ready:
    • The address of your new home and the home you're moving from or have already moved from.
    • The exact date you moved or are planning to move.
    • The exact date you moved furniture or are planning to move furniture into your new property.
    • The exact date your tenancy agreement began or is due to begin on your new home, if applicable.
    • The exact date sale completed or is due to complete on your new home, if applicable.
    • Landlord or lettings agent name, address and phone number for your new home, if applicable.
    • Name and phone number for the previous occupier of your new home, if known.
  2. Complete the moving to Rochdale borough form below and email it to us using the details on the form.
  3. We'll then send you your first bill. We aim to do this within 2 weeks of you moving in to your new home or if you've already moved within 2 weeks of us receiving your form but in some cases it can take longer. You'll be responsible for paying Council Tax from the date sale completes on your property. If you're renting, you'll be responsible for paying Council Tax from the date your tenancy agreement begins.
  4. Once you've got your first Council Tax bill for your new address, you can create a MyAccount so you can set up Direct Debit payments, check your balance and more
  5. Remember, it's your responsibility to tell the local authority where you've moved from that you're moving out.
