Councillor Billy Sheerin
The Mayor of Rochdale 2019-2020
Billy was born in 1944 in Castleton, the son of Joseph and Gladys, a spiral spring maker and a cotton worker.
The youngest of 3 children, he was educated at St Gabriel’s RC School and Rochdale Technical College. Growing up, his interests were making things, pantomimes, football, cricket and finding out how machines worked. At the age of 15, he secured an apprenticeship at David Bridge and Company, before achieving a first class City and Guilds in mechanical engineering. In his early twenties Billy worked as a test engineer at Rolls Royce in Derby. After returning to Rochdale he joined Holroyds Precision Engineers in Milnrow where he progressed to a development engineer. He then moved to Fredrick Greenwoods on Belfield, where he stayed for 26 years as a senior project engineer. He ended his working life with positions at Pifco in Failsworth and then Pulse Home products in Royton. He met his wife Lynn at the Rochdale Catholic Theatre Guild. They married in 1966. The couple have 3 children; 2 daughters, one son and 5 grandchildren. They moved to Castleton when their first daughter was born and have been actively involved in their local community ever since.
Billy has had various roles in amateur dramatics for over 50 years, including playing in and producing major musicals. A pantomime he wrote is still produced at St Gabriel’s every year. Whitworth Amateur Dramatics and Musicals Society (ADMS) and St Thomas Moore Alkrington ADMS have had musicals directed by him.
As well as producing numerous shows across the borough, he is also a long-standing member of the Rochdale Curtain Theatre, where he has held various key posts. Billy has been a ward councillor for Castleton since 2012 and assistant to the portfolio holder for adult and social care from 2013. He is also the older person’s champion for the borough. Outside of politics and his theatre work, Billy is a keen gardener and enjoys playing golf, watching cricket, travelling and visiting family across the country. Happy to turn his hand to anything, he recently restored his Lambretta Li 150 scooter, now over 50 years old, to perfect condition. He was proud to help Rochdale compete in the In Bloom competition, which culminated with a gold medal in the 2018 Britain in Bloom awards. A lifelong practicing Christian and active member of St Gabriel’s and St John the Baptist RC Church, he is a strong believer in ecumenical activities and working together across all faiths for the benefit of local communities.
