Applying for a job​ at the council

If you've left the Armed Forces and apply for a job at the council, you'll be guaranteed an interview if you meet the following conditions:

  • The Armed Forces was your last long term employer.
  • You can demonstrate you've been job seeking for at least 6 months since leaving the armed forces.
  • A maximum of 2 years (24 months) has elapsed since you left the armed forces.
  • You meet the essential criteria for the job.

Employment support

  • Career Transition Partnership Provides successful resettlement services for those leaving the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Marines. Also act as an intermediary service for employers wishing to hire Service leavers.
  • Community Champi​ons Get help with completing an application form, writing a CV, interview techniques and more.​
  • Hopwood Hall College A vocational college, set across two campuses in Middleton and Rochdale. It offers practical courses including: short programmes in the community, free GCSE English and maths, NVQs and foundation degree level qualifications.
  • Jobs, training and volunteering Find a job, access training or view volunteering opportunities.
  • MOD Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme Promotes lifelong learning amongst members for the armed forces. Provides financial support for pursuit of higher level learning.
  • Naval Families Federation​ Gives details of initiatives which include enhanced access to support services and revised policies that make it easier for service spouses and civil partners to accrue national insurance contributions when accompanying a serving person on an overseas posting. 
  • Regular Forces Employment Association Helps men and women of all ranks, leaving the armed forces to find and to remain in employment throughout their working lives.
  • The Royal British Legion Provides details of getting into work after leave the forces including training, job vacancies, interview preparation and a guide to starting your own business.
  • Troops to Teachers The programme is about recruiting the very best ex armed forces personnel into teaching.

Working for yourself

  • Blue Orchid for business start-up services We fund Blue Orchid to deliver business support services on our behalf. They also have the contract to delive​r support to ex-forces people to start their own business.
  • Business is Great Britain Start up loans scheme offers loans of around £2,500, as well as access to expert support to help develop a business plan.
  • Enterprise Allowance Jobcentre Plus has developed a new enterprise allowance to help people become self employed. Applicants must be claiming Jobseekers Allowance for a minimum of 13 weeks and not be on the work programme. Ask your personal adviser for more information.
  • GOV.UK Can offer an on-line service to support new business start-up, and help existing businesses expand and improve. The website has many sources of information to assist businesses including links to training and seminars.
  • HM Revenue & Customs Tax guide Support for people who are going self employed. Their short courses are FREE​.
